Bargaining with commitments

چکیده

We study a simple bargaining mechanism in which, given an order of players, the first n− 1 players sequentially announce their reservation price. Once these prices are given, the last player may choose a coalition to cooperate with, and pay each member of this coalition his reservation price. The only expected final equilibrium payoff is a new solution concept, the “selective value”, which can be defined by means of marginal contributions vectors of a reduced game. The selective value coincides with the Shapley value for convex games. Moreover, for 3-player games the vectors of marginal contributions determine the core when it is nonempty. ∗This paper is published in International Journal of Game Theory 33(1), 129-144 [2004]. A previous version of this paper has benefited from helpful comments from Gustavo Bergantiños. Numerous suggestions of two anonymous referees, the Associate Editor, and William Thomson, Editor, have led to significant improvements of the final version. Noisy commitments: The impact of information accuracy on efficiency

We report an experiment designed to test the influence of noisy commitments on efficiency in a simple bargaining game. We investigate two different levels of commitment reliability in a variant of the peasant-dictator game. Theoretical analysis suggests that the reliability of commitments in this game does not affect efficiency. We find that accurate commitments promote efficiency, as expected ...

Commitment and compromise in bargaining

This paper studies observable and irrevocable commitment in bargaining. We investigate when commitment tactics can cause an impasse and when compromise is feasible. In the static model in which a player’s commitment decision is made simultaneously with his choice of bargaining stance, compromise becomes unattainable (Ellingsen and Miettinen, 2008). We first analyze a static bargaining model, in...

“We Don’t Talk to Terrorists”: On The Rhetoric and Practice of Secret Negotiations

Political actors sometimes make public commitments not to negotiate with other actors whom they label as being beneath diplomacy. Interestingly, such commitments are sometimes made even as they are being broken. Why do actors sometimes publicly denounce adversaries with whom they intend to negotiate? What factors influence actors’ incentives to label adversaries in one way as opposed to another...

A Bargaining Model Based on the Commitment Tactic

This paper studies a one-shot, simultaneous-move bargaining game. Each bargainer makes a partial commitment (a share of the unit size cake that she would like to get), which can later be revoked at some cost to the player. The payoffs are defined, in part, by the Nash bargaining solution, where the feasible utility set is affected by the players' partial commitments. Under certain assumptions o...

Title International Negotiations on Climate Change : A Non - cooperative Game Analysis of the Kyoto Protocol

We investigate international negotiations on CO2 emissions reduction in the Kyoto Protocol by non-cooperative multilateral bargaining theory. The negotiation model has two phases, (i) allocating emission reductions to countries and (ii) international emissions trading. Anticipating the competitive equilibrium of emissions trading, each country evaluates an agreement of reduction commitments. We...
